Jonathan Sergison and Stephen Bates were both born in 1964 and graduated,
respectively, from the Architectural Association and the Royal College of Art in 1989.
Stephen Bates gained professional experience in London and Barcelona, while
Jonathan Sergison worked in London for David Chipperfield and Tony Fretton.
They established Sergison Bates architects in 1996 and since then their part-
nership has grown into a practice that is international in outlook and staff composition.
In 2010 a second office was opened in Zurich in response to a growing portfolio of European projects.
Throughout their career, Jonathan Sergison and Stephen Bates have combined
professional practice with teaching, lecturing and writing about architecture. They
have taught together at many architecture schools, including the AA in London,
EPF Lausanne, ETH Zurich, the ESARQ Barcelona, the Oslo School of
Architecture and Design and the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University.
Jonathan Sergison has been Professor of Architectural Design at the Accademia
di Architettura in Mendrisio, Switzerland since 2008, while Stephen Bates has
held the Chair of Urbanism and Housing at the Technische Universität München
Mark Tuff joined the practice in 1996, having graduated from the University of
East London and worked for Feilden Clegg Bradley. He was project architect on
a number of Sergison Bates’ award-winning projects before becoming a partner
in 2006. He has taught at a number of schools of architecture, including Robert
Gordon University, Aberdeen, the University of Lincoln, the Universidade
Autonoma de Lisboa and the University of Cambridge.
In 2014 Kirsten Gabriëls Webb and Andrew Jackson became Associates of the practice.
